project365...day71

Now for more stuff you don't want to see?
A big pipe in your basement with a new, huge, water-spewing hole at the threads due to your
Rather Expensive Plumber brutishly hacking and grinding away at the pipe upstairs
with nary a care for further ruptures down the likely fragile stem...
"Uh, well, that's your problem, but we'll come back and replace the whole line for ya."
Over my cold, dead, worm-infested body, dude.

Plan A: Plumber's Epoxy.
Plan B: Finch and his brother.
Plan C: Move to Jamaica.

It's been a wee bit stressful around here of late.

project365...day60

Finch in the process of researching how to fix our plumbing issues.
We ruled out a couple of things before he knocked out a part of the wet wall.
That yielded the answer.
A weak vent pipe was knocked offline at the threads connecting it to the drain.
Now it's time to call in the professionals.

project365...day58

This would be what you don't want to see on your wall underneath your kitchen sink.
A damp, crumbling, plastered wall.
During a downpour tonight Finch got out his flashlight
and went looking around, as is his habit,
just to see if there are problems needing to be addressed.
{Personally?  I prefer the pretend-it-doesn't-exist-until-it-explodes-in-your-face plan.}
So, after noticing some odd things around the foundation in the basement...
{insert heart palpitations here}
...he ended up finding this...
which we are both surprised we missed, actually.
Oh my heavens, owning a home really sucks sometimes.
This can't be good.

project365...day45

So, this picture was not taken today.
It was actually taken several days later.
Why, do you ask?
Because I spent the entire night prior to this day vomiting.
I'll spare you any further details, but it was ugly.
So, about 6am, we decided it was time to head to the ER.
Woke up the kids, got them ready and loaded up.
Then I spent the day there looped up, asleep and rehydrating.
Sweet mercy, pharmaceuticals and quiet hospital beds can be a beautiful thing.

Anyhoo...I got this idea for the picture out of the Sunday paper.
Do you see the little heart-shaped shadow cast by the ring?
The ring is from Finch's year spent in Siberia just before we were married.
The poem is one of our favorites.

project365...day39

Ya know what's worse than being sick?

Being sick and having vertigo too.
*
This is the progression of how things looked when I got up this morning.
Zee is sick now too, so, planning lots of nothing today.
Mr. Impenetrable Constitution {Boo} appears to have escaped with a runny nose.
Hoping for a better day tomorrow.

project365...day18

The Beast.
Somehow I am going to have to make peace with this thing.
Our brilliant doctor gave me a few ideas today.
And now...to begin.

oh my holy freaking goodness

There's this blog I love to read.  It's called The Pioneer Woman.  I found it last year through some other blog.

Have I mentioned how much I love blogs?  Yeah, I know, ridiculous.  There are worse things.  As such, I have a handful of them that I check on most days.  Hers is at the top of that list, and especially on days that could use a little more happy.   Because...The Happy?  Is PW's speciality.

She's a crazy good photographer and seems to enjoy spreading the photography love around with these assignments and tutorials and giveaways, etc.  Anyhoo...she's got like a billionty readers, or something, and does these photo assignments once in awhile under the Photography section of her blog.  The winner even gets a prize.

The most recent assignment is "Favorites" which after I read her description, pretty much summed up this photo for me.

So, guess who decided to submit one?

When I uploaded mine, there were...wait for it...more than 118,000 photos already in the pool.  Freakwad.  But, dagnabbit, I still wanted to give it a shot.  So, I did.

Get a load of this.

Did you just hear that sound?

It was the photography bug taking a bite out of my arse.

A tale of two earrings

These are my earrings.  I love earrings.  I have roughly 582 pairs of them, but don't tell Finch, because I always want more.  I love earrings.  The bigger, the danglier, the sparklier, the better.

But, since I became a mother, I have been often engaged in the search for the perfect pair of "Mom" earrings.  These are the realization of that search.  I have had them for a couple of years now.  I adore them, because they are perfect in my mind, for this season of life.  They're light, go with everything, and round, which means my hair doesn't wind itself into or around them and drive me crazy while my hands are busy guiding my children out of harm's way.  I wear them all. the. time.

However, the reason I wear them constantly is different now than it was at first.

I wear them because they talk to me.

They have a story to tell.

Several months ago, we were in the thick of a particularly difficult stretch in parenthood.  I don't remember the details, but both Finch and I were worn out with little grace left for each other at the end of any given day.

On this particular evening, we were getting ready for bed.  We use our basement bathroom, so as not to wake up the kidlets.  The sink in this bathroom is quite small, so we wash our faces in the utility sink nearby.  Finch, a night or two prior, had made a passing comment that I should probably take out my earrings before washing up, because they could easily slip out in the process and end up down the open drain, which would likely wreak havoc on our 80-year-old pipes and wind up costing heaps of money to fix.  I of course rolled my eyes, said rude things to him in my head and ignored his concerns.

Like I said.  We weren't in a happy place.

So.  Guess what happened?

I wiped my wet mug off on a towel that night, went to grab my various bits of jewelry to corral before bed (because, what a trauma it would be to take it all off one step earlier)...and...one earring had decided to make a point.

I felt my foolishness immediately, and weariness, and knew the additional, unnecessary stress it was going to cause Finch.  And it did.  I could see him mentally tally the time and energy, unavailable time and energy, it was going to take him to try to fish that damn earring out.  And we both knew in our guts it was unlikely to even be a successful attempt.  A plumber would have to be called.  Lord have mercy on our budget.

So I prayed.  It's what I do when I don't know what else to do.  I asked Jesus to make that drain cough up that earring.  And quick too, if you don't mind.  He's done crazier stuff than this, I reasoned.  Please have mercy on a petulant wife.

We went to bed that night defeated and deflated.  No more words were said.  It was the worst of times.

The next day, I had mountains of laundry to do, so I went about my chores.  It was a regular kind of day.  We were our usual variety of train wreck.  I forgot about the earring.

Eventually, it came time to get ready for bed.

Here's what I saw when I reached to turn on the faucet:

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,
*
It was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness,
*
It was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity,
*
It was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness,
*
It was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair...

4 is the new 2

Someone is exercising her right to have a Terrible Twos phase.
Problem is, she just turned four.

We're hoping the intensity and sudden onset are inversely related to the duration.

Pray for us.

Happy Birthday...Where's the Emergency Room?

Notice anything strange about this picture?  The headwrap on Daffodil perhaps?  How about the HOSPITAL BAND on my baby?

The kidlets had another fabulously good time at their birthday party this summer.  However, after they woke up from their nap afterward, in approximately 2.3 minutes, Zee had gotten on one of her new, lovely toys...then immediately rolled over backward and hit the back of her head on the table/bench.  She started screaming of course, so I was holding her when Finch noticed something bizarre on my arm.  "Hey, what's that on your ar..."

Blood.  Lots and lots of fresh blood.  And so the craziness ensued.  After calling our doctor and getting her cleaned up it didn't look as bad as we thought it could, but not as good, either.  So, we embarked on our first ER visit.

Four hours later we were back--with our first stitch.  And a bunny with a headwrap (just like hers, at an earlier point in the process).  And yes, that's right...not stitches, but STITCH.  One.  But hey, I am certainly not complaining.

Zee of course thought the whole adventure was just that.  Her favorite part?  The purple popsicle at the end.  Worst part?

When Mama dropped her "delicious, delicious" popsicle on the ground while getting her in the van.

my little rockstars

The little man is working that 'tude.  Dude...we watch nothing but PBS!  Where did he learn that?

Zee just loves her Barbie shades and beads. And pink tutu. And silver shoes. And sparkle nail polish.

Oh my ever greying head...it's moments like these that give me the sweats thinking about the teen years.
