From Russia with love

Finch and I met in Russia in 1996.  It was my second trip and his first of many between us.  Understandably, Russia holds a special fondness in our hearts.

Like many other cultures, there is a distinct set of flavors at the Russian dinner table.  Dill, for instance, is inexorably linked in my mind with a host of memories from those months spent abroad.  As for Finch, there is a sweet spot in his belly for a certain dish, Okroshka (in which the primary ingredient is Kvass), and the all important Stoli chaser.

For his birthday this year, I was finally (after a three year hiatus due to motherhood) able to accomplish his annual wish for this sublimely perfect dinner.  With a little surprise: traditional Russian chocolate, aerated, then laced with Cognac.

He was very pleased.
